Easter Books for Kids: Are YOU sending the right message?

Want some nice Easter books for your kidlets that have a nice balance between explaining the real story and the Easter bunny? Here are the ones we have in OUR house and are enjoying this week and next ;)

The Easter Storywithout needing much explanation, tells the true story of Easter

The Story of Easter   has great pictures, and also sticks more closely to the true story of Easter

What is Easter?   is a great compromise! A light, rhyming, fun tale that differentiates between the Easter bunny, jelly beans, dressing up- and the story of Jesus' resurrection.

 In other news:

Our kiddos are getting some new books in their Easter baskets this year, so I thought I'd share for those of you that can benefit;

Standing on My Own Two Feet
This has been Spidermans' favorite book since I first bought it for him when he was just over a year old. All the pages are torn and now there are two missing, so he is getting a brand new copy in his basket! <3 This is a great tale that compares the child's two feet- with his/her two homes, two schedules, etc. and that mom and dad both love him/her no matter what <3

Mommy, What is Celiac Disease?

This one is obviously going to be for baby A (well, and Baby B- but she won't appreciate it yet ;)) I just found it on Pinterest the other day, and thought to look it up today! I will keep you posted once I get it in how good of a read it is for the little ones! <3

Easter In Our House:

I typically boycott all the hullabaloo that goes along with the commercialization of Easter. Not for any religious opposition, but simply because I hate it. I hate spending money on cheap crap . I avoid candy like the plague, because frankly, my kids go insane. We decorate eggs, and the "Easter bunny" hides them around the house.

Although honestly, I'm not sure even my kids believe the some big bunny comes tromping though our house to hide EGGS! But whatever, the hunt is fun, and the kids get baskets at the breakfast table. Here is what we did last year:

We decorated our eggs (which we then eat btw- nothing goes to waste here!) We got biodegradable easter grass and each basket ($1.00 section at Target) hold 2 pieces of egg shaped sidewalk chalk, and they each got a new chapstick (also the $1.00 section at Target).

Two easy, and low waste, and NO CANDY Easter baskets for less then $10.00.

What have you done to "green up" your Easter?

Crafty Mama: "Pinspired" Projects Edition

I figured I should share some of my recent projects in hopes that they might assist you in later quick, budget friendly recipes or gift ideas! I shared some of my Thanksgiving recipes and craft ideas HERE.

Here is the NNM Holiday Gift Guide from 2012:

The last few years we have taken to making homemade gifts for our family. Last year we re used our milk bottles to house our easy granola

The year before that we made heart felt individual ornaments

Holiday Gift Guide 2012

This year, the kids made snowflake ornaments out of Popsicle sticks. Somehow, I failed to get a picture of our finished product; but they were like the ones you made in school that looked like this:

We used pipe cleaners as the ornament hanger and used permanent markers to write our names on the back.

My sister is getting married this year, and her and her fiance love Crate & Barrel. I was able to score a setting for 4 from a local yard sale site on Facebook a few months back. The lady I bought it from threw in some extra place mats, so I used those and some inexpensive, washable fabric paint (which was used for multiple gifts as you'll see) to personalize them for my parents and the in laws.

place mat and fabric paint

For hubby, who is an avid poker player, I decided this idea from Pinterest was perfect! I just used a hole punch and a pipe cleaner to tie them all together. Total cost? A $2 deck of cards ;) and a WHOLE LOT OF LOVE <3

For the older kids; Spiderman, Baby A, and my niece Phia, I used the kids crayon stubs to make crayon disks. I got the idea and instructions HERE

After baking at 250 degrees for about 20 minutes, they were done! The "gift bags" were leftover from the $2 pack of red paper lunch bags we got to make our advent bags. I also grabbed a coloring book for each child from the $1 bin at Target

Birthdays 2013:

Hubby's gift was inspired by this PIN

Walk a Little Slower Daddy

I was able to get a 2pk canvas for $7.99 at Michaels' Craft Store, and then we just used the fabric paint we had on hand, a permanent marker, and leftover raffia from our holiday ornament wrapping.

And now I have another canvas left to use for a later project!

Sissy's gift was inspired by this PIN

make up magnet board

We scored a baking dish and some magnets at the same craft store, and just used super glue and the same fabric paint at home. Spiderman saw the little wooden accents, which we just super glued on, for $0.49 each in the scrapbook section!

And finally, recipe FUN:

Today we made our own bread to have with just a family size can of tomato soup for dinner...

crusty whole wheat bread , easy!

I'd say it was a success! ;) I only altered the recipe by using whole wheat flour in lieu of white flour. I think next time I'll use a less grainy flour, like almond flour though to make the bread a bit less dense.

We had flour in the pantry, and always have sea salt; so total cost? $1.99 packet of yeast. Result? An entire loaf of bread which fed 4 of us for dinner, 2 slices each! <3

Last night I also used up some ripe bananas, but realized I had no loaf pan- so improvised and used this recipe to make muffins. What I liked about it is that it uses honey and applesauce instead of sugar and oil!

Mine look dark because, again, I use whole wheat flour. They are good, but dense due to the whole wheat flour and the applesauce. Total cost? NOTHING because I was using up stuff we had! <3 Perfect.

What are some of your favorite budget friendly, easy projects??? Food or otherwise??

Day 4 #12DaysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving: Random Acts of Pinspiration ;)

So you have no cash. Or very little, like the rest of us. You see all the GREAT deals and steals and ways to GIVE we have going on on the blog right now, but you're afraid you'll barely be able to cover your kids gifts if at all!

We have a solution for that. Well, Pinterest does ;)

logo compliments of Pinterest

Go to Pinterest and search for 'random acts of kindness'. Enough hits will come up that it would give you one for every day of the year and then some! Here are some of my favorites that I compiled from various pins that cost little/no money:

1. community bulletin board? leave a FREE compliment or FREE smile page for people to take from

used from Things of Blue

2. Leave a dollar or two taped to the outside of a vending machine with a note that says "Enjoy a treat!"
3. Donate unused or unwanted toys/house goods/clothes/etc. to your local shelter or Goodwill
4. collect coupons for a new mom or friend of things you know they use! ex/ diapers, formula, soap, etc.
5. Hide some dollar bills in the dollar bin at Target ;)
6. Go read a book at the local nursing home or pediatric unit of the hospital
7. send someone special, or that you haven't talked to in a while an e card (or a real card if you have a stamp laying around :))
* lots of great sites for FREE e cards, just do a Google search. But my favorite is Pingg ;)
8. Offer to walk a friends dog

Have a LITTLE bit of Cash??

9. Buy the person behind you coffee
10. Find a $5 movie at Target, or one you don't watch anymore, and leave with a bag of popcorn on a neighbors doorstep; "enjoy move night on me!"

I hope this helps to bring home that this holiday, our #12daysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving is NOT about donating a bunch of money you don't have. It's about reminding us that we ALL have little to spare, but some have even LESS than us.

I'll preach for a moment: our kids don't need (much as they say they do) they latest and greatest technological toy. If you can afford it, great! and more power to you! But if you're like us- you can't.
Your kids get necessities for Christmas.
And you learn to focus on the special things, the real #reasonfortheseason  like time together spent decorating the tree, or watching a Christmas movie, etc.

We have always had our kids pick one toy Christmas morning that they choose to donate to a local shelter. It can be as little as a coloring book, or their "biggest" toy: they choose. and they get to bring it.

It's hopefully sending a message. Holidays are for GIVING.

If you have LITTLE to give, GIVING will actually make you feel like you have the MOST.

We here at NurturingtheNaturalMama would love to see our hundreds of FB fans all ADOPT A GRANDPARENT, or donate to Project R12. Or buy from our WAHMs and Network marketers in lieu of Corporate conglomerates this season. But at the least, this list will help you fulfill your holiday with what is truly important: Hope Faith and Giving. <3 Happy Holidays <3

Advent 2012

This year our family is working on strengthening our relationships with each other, and with God and our church. Having historically been what I would describe as more "spiritual" than religious in the past, I am learning a long with my kids, the story of the Bible and the birth of Jesus.

We have decided to celebrate Advent this year DIY style :)

It cost only 99 cents for the bags. Much cheaper than the traditional cardboard or chocolate laden advent calendars from the store.

I modified this idea from something I saw on Pinterest.

I filled each bag with a line from, essentially, the Nativity story. Although also modified, for my 2 and 5 year olds ;)

of course we also added some treats!

they got prepped and HUNG today over ribbon with clothespins!
What are some different things, DIY or otherwise, you're trying this year??

Forget 'attachment parenting'... It's called 'improvement parenting' ...

Trendy or not, like many others I have called myself an "attached parent". I'm not one for labels, as I have expressed before, but as my children grow and our family multiplies, I have done my best to stay abreast (no pun intended) of the issues, and continue to read blogs, articles, and books on parenting.

My hope is that in doing so, I will hopefully spare my children many many years of therapy! ha ha ;) One of our children is particularly "spirited". At times it is hard to tell what is ages/stages and what is more of a permanent personality trait. In hopes to shed some light on the situation, I took to the book Answering the 8 Cries of the Spirited Child . Each paragraph is like it has been written about my child- it almost puts me in a fog when I read it; like, really???! I'm not the only parent experiencing this and feeling like I'm doing something wrong??

We have instituted some of the suggestions already in our home in hopes that all of our children will benefit. Hopefully you find some inspiration here as well :)

Disclaimer: I will re iterate that these are ideas recommended by the Arps, the author of the above book. Additionally, I express them as things that are thus far working in our home and I hope you will find something that works for you. "Spirited" children do fall on a continuum like anything else, and these suggestions are not a replacement for professional intervention where necessary. Our child does also, in combination with what we try at home, see a therapist which we feel is an integral part of helping him feel comfortable in his own skin as he continues to enter in different social groups and the community at large.

Anger

Our child has particular issue dealing with and/or expressing anger and frustration. An idea that was spawned in combination from recommendations in this book, as well as some items seen on Pinterest, we came up with an "Angry Box"

our angry box, centrally located on the kitchen counter
In lieu of some of the other behaviors we were experiencing, ie; growling, hitting ourselves, pushing, throwing things, etc. Our children (particularly the "spirited one") choose a card when they are unsure how to channel the feelings of being upset/angry/frustrated.

Step 1. Identify your feeling.
Upset, angry, frustrated, depressed, etc.

Step 2. Choose a card from the Angry Box

these are some of the cards located in the angry box. they are folded inside and the kids choose with their eyes closed.

Step 3. Do whatever is on the card you choose.

The book also has other recommendations for what comes next if your child is still angry, but we have yet to get to that point :) So far, the box has worked every time. They get almost distracted by the act of the box and choosing a card, etc. and it's enough to make them forget about what upset them in the first place.

Flip Side

One thing that we are instituting starting this week given the success of the Angry Box, is the "Caught you being good jar" or as our younger kids call it: The Happy Box :)

There will be two boxes, because our kids are so far apart in age (15, 5, 2, and 4 months). Sissy's box will contain (based on her recommendations) $5 gift cards to places like Dunkin Donuts, Target, Aroma Joes, etc. When she consistently helps during the week, above and beyond the normal expectation of chores, etc. she will get to pick from her box.

The smaller kids box will contain fruit snacks, squinkies, and other little treats without being all about candy lol. They will get to pick from their jar when they help around the house, feed the dog, or have a great day listening/cooperating, etc.

Everyone is looking forward to the Happy Box <3

How did we come up with these ideas?

What goes in the Happy Box? How is the Angry Box going? How is our family doing as a whole? Where is the disconnect when it comes to the lack of listening and cooperation? How do we get each child, and each member of the family for that matter, to feel loved and appreciated and included given the age differences?

We instituted a Family Appreciation Night.

Given that I am home and my husband works, we have little time for the suggested just-you-and-me time where one parent picks a time to have one on one time with each child. That is ideal, but just not possible for our family at this time. So next best thing? Get everyone together for an hour a month (yes, just an hour) and express how you feel about one another and what everyone can do to improve the family.

Step 1. Pick a night. We chose a Friday night from 6 30 - 7 30pm. Send out an e vite, post it on your family calendar, etc.
Don't make it more than an hour. Little kids won't last longer than that anyways and older kids will dread having to spend a "whole night" with the family lol. Let it end on a good note :)

Step 2. Prep by getting a special snack or drinks for the night. Make it special.

Step 3. The night is here!

Here is what we did:
* We had each of our kids write down (or verbalize) one thing they're thankful for or appreciate about our family, and one thing they would like us to improve.

I was undecided as to whether our kids would even participate in such an activity! Shockingly, our kids came up with the following (I'll admit, brilliant) insights;

They were thankful that: they have siblings, that we have good relationships with each other, and that each member helps around the house.

They wanted to improve: that we hug more, that we do more things as a whole family, and that we listen more attentively to one another.

Step 4. Create action items for the improvement items.
We came up with agreeing to be more cognisant of hugging each and every family member a MINIMUM of once a day, everyday.

We developed some ideas (based on the kids recommendations) of some things they would LIKE to do as a family. They wanted to go out to dinner, watch a movie, go somewhere- like the museum or the zoo, etc. We furthered the action item by agreeing to do this family activity once every other week.

Note: It may not sound like a lot (once a week), but with a teenager, and two kids who are on shared custody schedules... it is a time frame that was realistic for us. If we do more- Great! but this way, it can be a schedule we guarantee we stick too, instead of feeling like everyone is disappointed when we have to keep "rescheduling" or canceling.
Step 5. What do they want to see at the next meeting?
We left out a notebook that the kids could either write in or leave notes in throughout the month, with suggestions for the next meeting. Are there specific snacks they would like? Or items they want to address? or things they know they DON'T want to do at the next one?

* I also made sure everyone felt appreciated by giving each family member a little gift (the smaller kids each got a coloring book, and older sis and dad got cards with heartfelt messages), and an award. I handmade the awards just on construction paper for each child that indicated why we were proud of them ( a specific, recent item) and one area where we were going to work with them to improve (ex/ my son needs to work on his handwriting, etc) throughout the next month.
This leaves accountability on BOTH sides for working on those items. Hubby and I's hope is that the appreciation items help them see that we DO also pay attention to what they are doing GREAT <3

I hope this helps you on your "Improvement Parenting" journey :) After all, who wouldn't want to be a better parent???
