Our Holiday in Pictures

Here's a review of our family holiday this year:
Enjoy! :)

We made our own candlesticks while we hosted Thanksgiving again this year

We made Advent bags this year filled with the story cards of Jesus' birth and some treats of course, for the season of Advent

the kids had fun opening the bags each day to see what was inside <3

Spiderman and Baby A enjoyed making their annual Gingerbread house

and this year they both got to color wooden Christmas trees they got at Family Appreciation Night

We even found some wooden ornaments at Target (20 for only $5) and the kids had a blast coloring them and putting them on the tree!

Baby B, myself, and my friend Ali got to spend some time scoping out local crafts at the annual South Berwick Holiday Stroll!

Spiderman, Baby A, and Sissy did an excellent job decorating the tree...

....and showing off their favorite ornaments!

baby A and auntie Shell, from The Economical Eater, baked Christmas cookies

and the 3 youngest participated in this years' Christmas pageant at our church. Baby B was baby Jesus, Spiderman (front RIGHT) was a shepard, and Baby A (far RIGHT) was an angel (who refused to wear her halo lol)
then we hosted Christmas Eve for the rest of the Sirois clan L-R: auntie Cortney, Amma, Baby A, Pepe, Baby B, and cousin Phi

they LOVE family time <3 L-R: Phi, Baby A & Baby B
Even Sissy and Daddy had some fun! :)

 Then SANTA CAME!

Santa and the grandparents spoiled the kids this year! Santa brought the kids 3 presents each this year instead of one- they got totally spoiled!

daddy and Spiderman even got to build a tow truck together! He was so proud of it!!

Overall a blessed holiday, and we look forward to MANY MANY more <3
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year

Day 8 #12DaysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving: Throwing a Budget Friendly Holiday Bash

Hello, Nurturing the Natural Mama readers! My name is Michelle, and I blog over at The Economical Eater

On my blog, I mostly share budget-friendly, vegetarian recipes and restaurant reviews. I also happen to be NNM's younger sister. ;) Today, I'm sharing with you all some ways to make your holiday parties more affordable - without eliminating any of the fun!

Hosting holiday parties can be great for a lot of reasons. For starters, you don't have to drive anywhere - so you can just relax and have a few glasses of wine (or beer) without worrying about how you’re getting home. Secondly, it's nice to have your closest friends and family see your home decked out for the holidays. The downside? You have to do all the work, which can be time consuming and expensive. But it doesn't have to be.

Anytime I entertain, I follow these three simple "rules" to ensure my guests (and me) still have a blast, without blowing my bank account (and without me spending the entire night in the kitchen):

1.) B.Y.O.B. There is no reason why you should provide all of the food plus all of the beverages. Guests are always more than willing to bring what they'd like to drink - especially since everyone has different tastes anyway. To make it more festive, have your guests bring their favorite bottle of wine or craft beer, so everyone can try a little bit of each others'.

2.) Use what you already have. Even with the beverages off your plate, the food can easily get complicated...and cost you a fortune. Simplify the menu, and plan it around what you already have in your kitchen. You can easily turn a can of black beans into black bean hummus, or a can of chickpeas into crispy, spicy roasted chickpeas. Deviled eggs are also super easy and affordable to make (especially for smaller parties), and you can never go wrong with a plate of cheese and crackers.

3.) Keep it simple. Most guests are more than happy to gather around for cocktails and hearty appetizers. Keep the menu simple, and offer 3-4 appetizers (especially recipes you can make ahead of time). This will also prevent you from spending the entire night in the kitchen!
It's really that easy to make your holiday parties festive while keeping your costs down.

Here's to a happy and economical holiday season!

Oh, and to make your holiday party prep even easier, NNM and I are giving one lucky reader a Chef'n VeggiChop

Day 4 #12DaysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving: Random Acts of Pinspiration ;)

So you have no cash. Or very little, like the rest of us. You see all the GREAT deals and steals and ways to GIVE we have going on on the blog right now, but you're afraid you'll barely be able to cover your kids gifts if at all!

We have a solution for that. Well, Pinterest does ;)

logo compliments of Pinterest

Go to Pinterest and search for 'random acts of kindness'. Enough hits will come up that it would give you one for every day of the year and then some! Here are some of my favorites that I compiled from various pins that cost little/no money:

1. community bulletin board? leave a FREE compliment or FREE smile page for people to take from

used from Things of Blue

2. Leave a dollar or two taped to the outside of a vending machine with a note that says "Enjoy a treat!"
3. Donate unused or unwanted toys/house goods/clothes/etc. to your local shelter or Goodwill
4. collect coupons for a new mom or friend of things you know they use! ex/ diapers, formula, soap, etc.
5. Hide some dollar bills in the dollar bin at Target ;)
6. Go read a book at the local nursing home or pediatric unit of the hospital
7. send someone special, or that you haven't talked to in a while an e card (or a real card if you have a stamp laying around :))
* lots of great sites for FREE e cards, just do a Google search. But my favorite is Pingg ;)
8. Offer to walk a friends dog

Have a LITTLE bit of Cash??

9. Buy the person behind you coffee
10. Find a $5 movie at Target, or one you don't watch anymore, and leave with a bag of popcorn on a neighbors doorstep; "enjoy move night on me!"

I hope this helps to bring home that this holiday, our #12daysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving is NOT about donating a bunch of money you don't have. It's about reminding us that we ALL have little to spare, but some have even LESS than us.

I'll preach for a moment: our kids don't need (much as they say they do) they latest and greatest technological toy. If you can afford it, great! and more power to you! But if you're like us- you can't.
Your kids get necessities for Christmas.
And you learn to focus on the special things, the real #reasonfortheseason  like time together spent decorating the tree, or watching a Christmas movie, etc.

We have always had our kids pick one toy Christmas morning that they choose to donate to a local shelter. It can be as little as a coloring book, or their "biggest" toy: they choose. and they get to bring it.

It's hopefully sending a message. Holidays are for GIVING.

If you have LITTLE to give, GIVING will actually make you feel like you have the MOST.

We here at NurturingtheNaturalMama would love to see our hundreds of FB fans all ADOPT A GRANDPARENT, or donate to Project R12. Or buy from our WAHMs and Network marketers in lieu of Corporate conglomerates this season. But at the least, this list will help you fulfill your holiday with what is truly important: Hope Faith and Giving. <3 Happy Holidays <3

Day 3 #12DaysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving: Project R12, A TRUE #reasonfortheseason

Day 3 is the MOST important of our #12DaysofChristmas #SeasonofGiving. Be sure to check out the Christmas Campaign and PLEASE, GIVE today! After all, THIS is the #reasonfortheseason! Happy Giving!

all photos compliments of Project R12

Project R12 is a non-profit that stands behind Christian Heroes to unlock the unknown in communities around the world. We exist to support the vision of indigineous leaders in rural, impoverished communities. Through riveting media and LIFE Projects, we will help to support the foundation of a self-sustaining community built on Health, Education, and Faith. We believe in giving people the key to unlocking life within themselves and their community through LIFE Projects that defeat poverty and awaken hopes, dreams, love, and ultimately LIFE.

The unit of LIFE is the driver behind all PR12 Hero LIFE Projects.  LIFE is defined by Health, Education, and Faith. These 3 elements give a person an opportunity to experience a well-rounded existence. If 1 of the elements is missing, the individual is less likely to grow to be a contributing member of society.
All LIFE Projects have the goal of improving the daily life of each person both economically and socially. All LIFE Projects will be founded on the principle of self-sustainment rather than dependence on outside support. Through LIFE Projects, each person’s life will be improved and the country will experience economic growth and positive social change from within.

Currently, Project R12 is working with a Hero in Uganda, Freddie Kajjumba, and his NGO to support Health, Education, and Faith among a rural village community. Freddie's outreach is mostly to those who are in extreme need and are made up of families, orphans, students, teenage mothers, and widows. Through partnering with Project R12, Freddie and his team hope to create a safe community where everyone has the freedom and ability to experience Health, Education, and Faith.

CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN:

Project R12 is running their 12Gifts Christmas Campaign that encourages self-sustainment and supports the dreams of children and families within rural communities in Uganda.
You can choose from 12 Gifts like seeds, sewing machines, livestock, etc - all items that promote self-sustainment. It's a great way to give differently this year and make a huge impact in another person's life.
If you have kids, there is a special section for them to use their allowance or piggy banks to give a gift to a kid just like them.
As a thank you, you will get a photo of your gift in action. This will be the first presents any of these children or families have ever received.
The Project R12 Hero in Uganda, Freddie, is going to wrap them and hand them out over the Christmas season with the goal of showing love, hope, and LIFE to everyone and anyone in the community.
The 12Gifts Campaign will run through the month of December with the goal of engaging 50 people to give. Help Project R12 unlock life in Uganda by giving  a gift that encourage self-sustainment and awakens dreams.

About the Founder:

Tara Hodgson, 26, is the founder and Director of Project R12.

I never pictured that I would be where I am now. As a little girl, I didn’t grow up with the dream of serving in Africa, starting a non profit, or anything of the sort. As a kid, my world revolved around the love of my family and aspirations of playing division one soccer. It was simple for me. All my hopes and dreams were enclosed within a hand-stitched, one pound ball. It is what I lived and breathed. Unfortunately my freshman year, I had a career shattering injury, and it became very apparent that I would never be able to run and play on the field like I had for so many years. To make a long story short, I was devastated. That one pound ball held more significance and power in my life than anything else. I had blindly interwoven my identity so deeply into soccer that without it – I felt completely lost. Looking back now, it is very clear to me that this was the first climb in my ascent to Project R12.

Project R12 is founded on Romans 12 from the Bible. That chapter has been a rock in my life and pushed me to love, support, and encourage others every single day. God has had me on a journey the last 25 years that is instrumental in me being able to carry out this vision of Project R12. It’s a scary thing to step out, take a leap of faith, and to follow. One thing I have realized and constantly remind myself is that God never wastes pain. Every single pang of pain, hurt, or disappointment I have experienced has been delicately redeemed in ways that bring to my knees, raise my hands in joy, and fill my heart with overwhelming humility.

During my travels, the stories, the passion, and the devotion that I encountered humbled me in a way nothing else could. Within each community there were Christian leaders who took a stand to lead their people, to teach them, to care for them no matter the circumstances. To me, they were Heroes. This is when I discovered the problem: there is little to no documentation or support of these Christian Heroes’ efforts to dissolve poverty and improve LIFE for their people. They have dedicated their existence to serving the Lord by striving to improve the quality of LIFE in Health, Education, and Faith for their communities. Through worldly eyes they had sacrificed everything, but through their eyes they were simply following the call of their King. They have already experienced amazing results even with such limited resources - what if we could stand together with them? Through Project R12, I hope we can stand with these Heroes and develop LIFE Projects that provide long-term, self-sustainable solutions based on the vision of each Hero and their community.

I'm baaaaack... again! :)

It has been a while since the last time you have heard from me here at NNM! For that, I am so sorry! But we have a  lot to catch up on which should keep me busy in the coming months! <3

Spiderman and Baby A are getting HUGE <3
 Crafty Mama- Installment II

Let's start with something easy & fun that's also eco friendly AND budget friendly! Here is what WE did at our house for our family members during the holidays;

As you know, we as a family (as I'm sure many of you have also experienced)  have struggled with finances over the last several years; getting back on our feet in this unsteady economy. You can check out my hand made gifts from last year HERE, in Crafty Mama. This year, I opted for something a little less hands- on, as I know I have two kids to chase after, and one on the way! So here's what I did:

Step 1_ in lieu of turning in the milk bottles we had been accumulating for the deposit as we normally would, I held on to them and cleaned them out to use as decorative containers. Cost? essentially free, because we drink the milk anyways :)

Step 2_ Next, I had the kids use their favorite color finger paints and paint their hand prints on the jars. Once they were dry, I just used a black Sharpie to go over each hand print with the appropriate child's name. Adorable and FREE (given that we used materials we already had at home).

Step 3_ homemade granola!

I used the recipe found HERE  from the Food Network site

I ended up making two batches to accommodate all my jars, and merely added some honey and cinnamon once it came out of the oven. The end result looked like this;

And it was DELICIOUS! Baby A and I just haaaaaad to sample some- you know, to make sure it was edible! :)

Step 4_  Once the granola cooled, I placed a small amount in each jar, and stuffed in the top some decorative holiday tissue paper to fill the gap in the tall milk jugs ( I would have had to have made, like, 6 batches if I had wanted to FILL the jugs!) I placed the cap back on the jugs and placed them in gift bags made out of recycled paper that I purchased at Target for 99 cents each!

Somehow I did not get a photo of the finished product- hmph! but they came out great! and everyone thought the granola was delish! So overall, total score, for only the cost of the gift bags, gift tags, and granola ingredients!

Did YOU make any hand made gifts this holiday?

Simplifying Holidays

Avoid the basket of crap.

Yes, crap. Crap plastic, crap stuffed animals which will collect dust and never be looked at again, crap candy, and commercialized cards and other trinkets. This will save you money, piece of mind, and probably a few pounds on the scale :)

As I read the Eco-Easter basket ideas available through Celebrate Green today, it got me thinking about all of this..... well, crap.

I described in Crafty Mama, how I simplified the Christmas holiday for my family this year. We, as a family, do not typically celebrate what I have branded as Hallmark holidays like Valentine's Day. However, this year my toddler did make adorable all-natural versions of the Rice Krispie treat at school, which were adorable and delicious (although I only got a bite, since he ate the rest lol)

So for Easter, what do you do? Do your kids really need a bucket full of chocolate and some marshmallow type substance pressed into the shapes of bunnies and chicks? Probably not (just a guess) :)

And no, they also do NOT need a real bunny for Easter! Bunnies and Easter DON'T MIX

Are there alternatives?

YES! 1, which I did last year- No gifts. Have them paint some eggs with food coloring you already have in your house, then hide them, and my toddler had a blast finding all his eggs! That was enough for him, and my wallet.

My friend Christine, who wrote an article for REThinking Everything Magazine, came up with the following natural option for her toddler;

Other ideas include one natural toy, filling a small basket with some exotic fruits and a small handful of all natural candy or other treats they don't normally get. Grab a coloring book or some recycled paper and a pack of new crayons or markers (there are also natural options, like the ones available at Hip Mountain Mama) and create some Easter-theme crafts together.

You can find a lot to do/make/enjoy this Easter holiday that does not involve synthetic plastics, large stuffed animals, mass produced cards which waste paper, and the previously ever-popular basket full of candy!

Disclaimer: This short blog is focusing solely on the commercialization and artificiality of many holidays, I am well aware that there are religious implications which I am (purposely) completely ignoring.

Lastly, you WILL see me at some point before the end of April, enjoy my one decadent (albeit artificial and probably utterly disgusting if I ever took the time to read the label) Cadbury Cream Egg :) Spring just wouldn't be the same without it.

How do you simplify your holiday(s)? And what's your guilty pleasure?
